As Ron Rowe evaluated the installation of his new shipping system, he realized that it had created a positive influence on all aspects of his enterprise. Turnover of his employees was drastically reduced and he was able to respond to those ever-present peak days in order to meet his customercommitments.
No longer did he have to fear the arrival of a government inspector who could cause him to cease operations or drastically alter the cost equation of his manning levels and shipping procedures. It also created a "process discipline" throughout his manu facturing system and allowed the shipping sequences to truly drive all the steps in the manufacturing process. No longer was his shipping dock filled with bedding while an item or two were rushed through the process to make a specific drop sequence near the front of the trailer. The days of having four or five hours of production piled on the shipping floor and then having to work overtime to complete several trailer loads were gone. The S-Five System had become the "conductor" of the orchestra and the music was sweet to his ears.
